Add your name to the open letter now to tell the CEOs of AGL, Energy Australia and Origin that it’s time for a better future, without coal.

Add your name to the open letter now to tell the CEOs of AGL, Energy Australia and Origin that it’s time for a better future, without coal.

Just three companies -- AGL, Energy Australia and Origin -- own the majority of Australia’s most polluting coal power stations.

If they closed their toxic coal power stations and replaced them with renewables, it would cut our emissions from coal power in half.

Australia’s reliance on coal for electricity makes us one of the world’s most polluting countries per capita. Our 19 remaining coal-fired power stations are Australia’s single biggest contributor to global emissions.

Last year, coal power stations emitted more CO2 emissions than every car in Australia combined! To stop climate change worsening and reduce the risk of even more devastating impacts in the future, we need to urgently cut our carbon emissions. And until we close all our coal power stations and replace them with cleaner technologies like solar and wind power, we cannot cut our emissions to a safe level.

Here’s how we do it:

  • Australia’s three biggest private coal power companies -- AGL, Energy Australia and Origin Energy -- together account for more than half of Australia’s carbon emissions from coal power.

  • These companies depend on Australian customers, and care deeply about their reputation.

  • If enough of their customers, staff, shareholders, investors and peers speak up, together, we can urge them to set a more ambitious timeline for moving to solar and wind energy instead.

These companies know that worldwide, coal power is on its way out. They have big decisions to make about where they put their bets for the decade to come.

The sooner we start making plans to move beyond coal, the better off everyone will be. A future beyond coal power could benefit all of us, with thriving communities and good jobs.  But that depends on companies taking leadership, and working with communities on plans to transition now

Add your name to the open letter now to send a message to the CEOs of these three powerful and polluting companies -- Australia is ready for a better future, without coal.

To the CEOs of AGL, Energy Australia and Origin,

For a safe future, we need companies like yours to invest in cleaner, cheaper renewable energy like wind and solar power.

We urge you to announce closure dates for your coal-burning power stations that are realistic and consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees.

That way, communities can get the support they need and put plans in place now to transition to thriving, healthy futures beyond coal.
